I just finished reading The Country Girls Trilogy and Epilogue. I was really glad that there were 3 books about Baba and Kate, because at the end of each one, I was looking for more story. The characters' personalities were strong, so that I was either laughing with them or thinking that they needed to "grow up"!

I was puzzled in the epilogue. Someone please tell me when Baba hooked up with Frank and how did that happen? Or...did she? ( I am a little embarrassed to ask that in case it was pivotal to the plot and I missed it!!!)

This was the first Box of Wine book I've read. Looks like I started off on a positive note.

Like Jane, I was glad there was more than one book about Cate and Baba. I, also wanted to learn more about them as the books wrapped up - even the last one - a sign of a good book. However, I did not like the switch in perspective from Cate to Baba in the last book. I could see the appeal, I suppose, but I had fallen for Cate at that point and, frankly, didn't like Baba enough to care what she thought.

Jane, I guess I don't remember how Baba met Frank either. Must have been glossed over. I was glad to learn Frank accepted Baba's illegitimate child.

As for O'Brien's writing style, I liked it quite a bit. There were beautiful descriptions but it wasn't overly wordy. There was plenty of action to keep me hooked and flipping the pages, but she also offered a lot of (Cate's) private thoughts so I really felt like I knew from where her actions were coming.

Overall, I liked the book a great deal. Thanks for introducing me to Edna O'Brien!

    Rating: ****

I finished reading Country Girls this weekend and my only disappointment was that I didn't have the trilogy version of the book. I really loved the writing style and loved the characters. O'Brien's writing style is soft and easy to read, but descriptive so that the characters and places felt very real. It was easy to fall into, and I'll definitely read the rest in the trilogy.

I adore edna o'brien's writing. after reading some "modern chick lit" I love edna even more. Her style is spare. deadly. No overblown adjectives. Just the facts, ma'am. She would never drop product names nor would she think they were important. Once, in London, in a Chelsea neighborhood, we happened upon a charming cottge behind a lovely old wooden gated fence. I snuck into the yard and took some photos. later, i learned, it was EDNA'S YARD! I now return you to regularly scheduled programming.
